Our Professionals Will Help You Respond to Damage

Water is one of the most common causes of residential damage in the United States. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), water damage affects roughly 14,000 people every single day.

Since water damage is so prevalent among homeowners and businesses, keeping an eye out for things like leaks, musty smells, and peeling paint can help catch water damage early on before it becomes a financial burden. Although did you know that not all water damage is equal? Water damage is classified into three categories—and we are going to explain them all to you.

When water damage strikes, the staff at Dry Force is available to support you. Our team of professionals offers reliable water classification and damage mitigation services for homes in areas of Texas such as Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, Plano, Arlington, and Austin.

Our technicians will perform an inspection to determine the correct class of water damage and will help restore safety in your home. Contact our staff at (877) 589-7504 to receive support with water damage on your property.

3 Categories of Water Damage

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classifies and categorizes water based on its originating source, range of contamination, and quality after coming in contact with materials.

The team of professionals at Dry Force uses this water classification scale to determine the best water damage mitigation and restoration methods. What works for sanitary water won’t work for a black water classification.

Image

Category 1: Sanitary Water

Also known as “clean water,” the IICRC defines sanitary water as water originating from a sanitary water source. These sources include water supply lines, clean toilet bowls, and toilet tanks. Rainwater and melted snow are also classified as sanitary sources.

This water classification doesn’t pose a substantial risk, but it can develop into contaminated water if it’s ignored for too long.

Image

Category 2: Contaminated Water

Contaminated water has long been referred to as gray water. This classification of water damage contains a significant amount of contamination and has the potential to cause sickness when touched or consumed.

Types of gray water sources include dirty toilet bowls, broken aquariums, and overflowing dishwashers and washing machines. Significantly contaminated water is dangerous. If contaminated water has spilled onto your carpet, our team of professionals will make sure to remove the padding and disinfect the materials.

Category 3: Black Water

Black water is extremely contaminated and harmful to human health. Category three water damage is grossly contaminated and contains dangerous, toxic pollutants that can cause significant health risks.

Black water can come from sources like seawater, waste line backflows, rising flood water, and raw sewage. It can also result from tropical storms and wind-driven rain. Grossly contaminated water may result in major health risks or even death.

Water Damage Category Progression

Remember that clean water can quickly turn into Category 2 or Category 3 water damage if not dealt with right away. This is because microorganisms such as mold can grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours, making water damage cleanup a clock race.

Our Water Damage Mitigation Process

The team of water damage technicians at Dry Force does not jump into the water mitigation process blindly. Check out our five-step water inspection process and learn more about how we approach water damage mitigation and restoration.
Image

Stop the Water Flow

We start our water damage mitigation process by identifying the water source and shutting it down. However, we will have to wait until the storm has passed if the water damage is weather-related.
Image

Determine Water Classification

Once the water has stopped, we determine the classification of water damage. This is the part where we figure out whether your property suffered from clean, gray, or black water damage.
Image

Extract All Water

Now that we know what classification or category the water damage falls under, we will get to work on extracting all excess water. We make sure all water is eliminated from your property before making any repairs.
Image

Dry and Sanitize

Next, we will use high-powered fans and dehumidifiers to dry the area. We will also use a special disinfectant solution to sanitize your space, especially if it is contaminated by gray or black water.
Image

Repair and Restore

Finally, we get to put the mitigation process behind us and get to work on the repairs. This is the part where we remove and restore walls, floors, the ceiling, and anything else that was impacted by water damage.

Water Damage Inspections

Sometimes it’s hard to know if you have a leak. That’s why we provide water damage inspection services. Our team utilizes the latest technology such as moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to determine saturated areas, even if they’re behind walls or under your floors.
