How To Clean Tub & Shower Drain Holes When Water Overflows

Your overflowing toilet could have been caused by blockages, plumbing issues, or excessive use of paper products. Whatever the reason, Dry Force is here to help you take immediate action and minimize the potential for water damage.

1. Unclog and Clean Your Shower Drain

You can do this using a plunger, drain snake, or chemical cleaning solution. Plungers are more effective when used in bathtubs rather than walk-in showers, so keep that in mind. If you opt for a drain snake, we recommend hiring a professional plumber to avoid further damage. If you want a more aggressive solution, you can turn to a chemical cleaner as well.

2. Clean Your Bath Overflow Hole

Your bathtub’s overflow is the small circular piece of metal between your shower drain and faucet. This hole exists to stop bathwater from getting too high and overflowing over the sides. You can do this by removing the metal piece and pouring vinegar and baking soda into the whole then flushing with water. If you are unable to remove the metal, you can also clean it by using a long, thin bottle brush to scrub the overflow and ensure that it doesn’t get plugged.

3. Scrub Your Shower Head or Consider Installing a Shower Filter

If you notice chalky white buildup on your showerhead, it’s a sign that soap scum and mineral residue are accumulating on your showerhead and in your drain holes. If you notice this, follow the steps above to clean your drain and overflow hole then use an old toothbrush and some vinegar to clear your showerhead of buildup. If you are looking for a more long-term solution, you might consider investing in a water filter on your showerhead. This will not only keep your showerhead free of mineral buildup but will also save your drain from clogging due to minerals as well.

Expert Tub & Shower Overflow Cleanup Process

If your shower or bathtub has reached the dreaded point of flooding, don’t worry. All is not lost. Professionals like our team at Dry Force dedicate their lives to cleaning up after emergencies like these. You may wonder what the cleanup process is like or what you can expect when you hire a professional. We’ve got you covered. Here is a detailed outline of the six steps we take on every single water overflow removal job from start to finish.

Source Elimination

We begin the process by identifying the source of your overflowing bath or shower so we can stop the flow of water in its tracks. This prevents further damage from occurring as we clear up the water.

Inspecting Damage

Next, we will draw on our expertise to conduct a detailed examination of the damage and put together a customized restoration plan that is tailored to your needs. We understand that every job is different and will work hard to make sure that we use the best methods available to remove water from your home.
Image

Evaluation

At this point, we will categorize the water damage into three classes: Clean Water (sanitary water), Grey Water (significantly contaminated), or Black Water (grossly contaminated). This allows us to make an accurate assessment of your damage and plan the right steps for cleaning, mitigation, and restoration.

Water Removal

Once we have put together a plan, we will promptly set up equipment and start removing water from your property. We always pay attention to detail to ensure that nothing is left unrepaired. We want your home to feel as comfortable as it did before disaster struck.

Antimicrobial and Water Mitigation

Finally, after the water has been removed and dried, we apply antimicrobial treatments as needed. We work to minimize damage, salvage belongings, and fully restore your property to its original safe and clean condition.
